Eligibility: Currently enrolled, full-time second-year JD students and second and third-year evening JD students with a minimum 2.670 GPA and in good academic standing.
Prior to applying for the fellowship, students are strongly encouraged to meet with Mary Sawicki (msawicki@suffolk.edu), to discuss your areas of interest and externship options.
Fellowship Placements: Students extern at a diverse range of field sites for which they have applied and been selected. Fellows commit to working as an extern full time for generally 6-12 weeks during the summer for the host organization for three academic credits. All Fellowship externships are for academic credit (pass/fail).
IRELAND PUBLIC INTEREST EXTERNSHIP
4 credits (3 field placement credits, 1 classroom credit)
Suffolk Law School has partnered with the National University of Ireland at Galway (NUIG) for an exciting program. Several Suffolk Law students will extern each summer in various public interest organizations in Ireland in different cities in Ireland. Prior to starting the externships, Suffolk Law students will be required to do academic work, equal to one credit, to introduce students to, among other things, the Irish legal system and culture, as well as provide students with an opportunity to meet and learn from practicing attorneys and judges from the area. After the course, Suffolk Law students extern at various Irish organizations for approximately eight weeks. The placements will be only in the public interest arena, including non-profits and government- related organizations. NOTE: This program is different from the Galway (Ireland) Study Abroad PLUS Externship program, as this program’s focus is the externship experience and does not include the two doctrinal courses in international law.
Eligibility: First- and second-year JD day students; and second- and third-year evening JD students with a GPA of 2.670. Students with a lower GPA may submit a petition to the Clinical Programs Director.
Approximate Dates: The approximate dates will be early June to the last week in July.
Placements: Students work full-time under the supervision of an attorney in the placement organization, as well as by the faculty supervisor. The externship placements will be predominantly in the public interest arena, including non-profits and government-related organizations. To the extent possible, our Galway affiliates will place students in organizations in Ireland corresponding with the students’ respective practice areas of interest.
