Spring 2022 Course Evaluations
What aspect(s) of the course or instruction could be improved?
The weekly readings are quite heavy, and in addition to the weekly homework assignments it can become a bit overwhelming. I think a more ’fine tuned’ homework assignment would have helped lessen the workload. Professor Rodwin consistently used the word "retarded" in class during discussions about intellectual disability. This language is ONLY appropriate when specifically quoting caselaw text. It is reductive to assume that all persons who face incapacity decisions are those diagnosed with mental retardation, which is largely not the case, and there are a long, long list of other intellectual disabilities. It made me uncomfortable to hear this word so consistently and so casually, and I did not feel comfortable bringing the issue forward. The course is perfect! Shorter writing assignments would be great. The fact that we had to bring in hard copies of the assignments on the days that we would discuss those readings was annoying because it felt like we were forced to do the readings well in advance n/a The heavy amount of reading compared to the class discussion often made the class feel like an advanced legal book club - read, discuss, repeat. I would have appreciated a bit more variance in structure. Nothing None getting more participants to engage in class discussion It would be better to have fewer homework assignments before class and switch to other types of assignments. Class discussions might be more lively if there weren’t questions assigned for each class, or if the questions assigned were asked during class time. I would instead of assigning students to present on a reading, have them do a presentation for a project/grade, and allow them to choose the exact topic of the presentation
