OLDFall 2022 Law School Course Evaluations
better! Our TA Nathan was amazing and really helpful with questions and understanding the material. He worked really hard to provide us with practice problems and hypos, so we weren ' t too in the dark come exam time. I approached Professor Burstein on a few occasions with questions. She did not give me straight forward answers and was very dismissive. Prior to taking this survey we met online for class. During this class we were let go early to complete this survey, but before we were able to log off Professor Burstein wanted to share information with us about student evaluations. She let us know that studies had been done that prove student evaluations are often bias and not effective. She also stated that it wouldn ' t effect her because she has tenure. She also let us know that these evaluations usually only reflect well on white male professors and we should consider our bias before taking this evaluation. I was a bit shocked by these comments as it felt like they were made to influence how we write our evaluation. I thought it was unprofessional and unethical. She’s a great professor I just feel like we were expected to have all of this prior knowledge as a 1L in our first semester. I feel like a lot more patience was needed with us but she would be better suited for 2L and 3L students. I found it very unprofessional of the professor to explicitly say that our course evaluations did not matter because she is "tenured". These course evaluations are supposed to aid the professor, especially when this class was so hard to follow for most students. I feel as though I need to say this... Many students complained about Pro. Burstein not being respectful to their questions. I take issue with that because most of the students that did complain tried to egg her on. I noticed smirking/laughing at the Prof. and what appeared to be passive aggressive questions. If anything I found that a handful of students were very disrespectful to her and seemed to display a level of arrogance. I do not believe that Prof. Burstein is a very good Civil Procedure professor but she has always been respectful and friendly towards me and others. She also never makes students feel stupid if they answer a question incorrectly. She was super nice, I do not think her style is very conducive with 1L ' s and maybe is more suited for higher-level students. She seemed particularly at odds with my class, who are hard workers and want to know the key information, and having irrelevant or overbearing slides was a death sentence for my class. I felt like this semester I was not getting much help from my professor and as a 1L it made me not enjoy the class as much as I tried because I was frustrated with the teaching style and frustrated with having to tech myself everything and struggling to do so. I can confidently say that I learned more from reading the book myself and from my TA ' s beautiful review session then I did from the actual class. The professor is a nice lady but I do believe that she should be
