OLDFall 2022 Law School Course Evaluations
the final exam. Nathan was an absolute gift to the class. One thing that I found unprofessional, and honestly problematic, was that before we did our evaluations, Professor Burstein made comments that were meant to sway the way we evaluate the course. She told us that "course evaluations are problematic and have been found to be biased against woman, and basically anyone who is not a white male." this comment seemed to be made in the suggestion that, if we gave her a negative review in any sense, then we are biased against her because of her gender. The reason for the tone or sentiment of my review has absolutely nothing do with her gender. My review is based on her conduct as a teacher, the way the material was presented and articulated, and the way that expectations were presented. While I understand that there are countless types of teaching styles, and not everyone will always connect with a boss, professor, employer, colleague, etc. I also can ' t stress enough the importance of availability no matter the relationship. I come from a family of professors and have seen first-hand how much work they put into their plans, classes, etc. One major takeaway I ' ve learned from my family is how absolutely vital adequate office hours are to student success. Yes, we are in a professional school. Yes, we are adults. Yes, we have a TA. However, nothing can replace an open avenue of communication between teacher and student. This connection simply hasn ' t been present this semester, and I think if it had been then only positive results would have made themselves manifest. I know a lot of people in my section have strong opinions about this class so I just want to say that I think Professor Burstein did her best to deal with us. For example in a lot of classes people would ask questions that didn ' t really have a yes or no answer, but they still expected one and would get upset that Professor Burstein didn ' t give it to them. I don ' t think she should be attacked for that Civil procedure is a tough subject for any student, but it was often made more difficult by abstract teaching. Prof. Burstein brought an actual pleading to explain complaints which made that whole section more relatable. Some people in my class were super disrespectful to Professor Burstein both in and out of class. She always handled these people with grace and respect. I learned a lot and genuinely enjoyed Professor Burstein ' s lectures. She ' s super engaging and easy to understand. I am very disappointed with the way she choose to end class on November 29, 2022. I know that a lot of the class was insulted in her devaluing of course evaluations. What I took from that conversation was that she has tenure and therefore, doesn ' t care about these evaluations. Also, I and many others thought that she implied that our class was going to give her bad evaluations because she is a woman. I honestly came out of this class wondering why she was teaching because it seemed like she was annoyed with us most of the time. I really believe she rather be on twitter or doing something with Patent Law instead of teaching this course. Professor Burstein, I know you have tenure and don ' t care about anything that I just said, but please, do
