OLDFall 2022 Law School Course Evaluations

takeaway from a particular case or principle was. The saving grace of this course, was the TA Nate because his review sessions are where the majority of the student could effectively learn the material and how the rule actually work in conjunction with each other. The classes where we were provided with examples of pleadings and such were very helpful as they outlined the structure and application of the rules. I think illustrating the rules in practice was far more helpful than how rules were defined in the text. I also thought the inclusion of policy decisions in discussions was helpful for real-world application of the law. My favorite thing about Professor Burstein is that she has a refreshing personality. The first day of class I was honestly relieved because she seemed very understanding and sympathetic to the 1L struggle bus. For a long time I used to think Professor Burstein would ask questions in her cold calls that are too difficult to answer, or maybe don ' t even have an answer. But I think this ultimately enhanced my learning because it made me read the cases a lot more closely than I otherwise would have and also read more thoughtfully. I found the TA review sessions to be the most enlightening aspect of the learning process. The TA did an excellent job of capturing the material in a helpful way. I did find the classroom instruction difficult to grasp, we would discuss cases paragraph by paragraph which made the key pieces of information difficult to discern amongst all the dicta and hypos we discussed throughout cases. Professor Burstein did a great job providing examples when we got to the later more substantive units that helped me be able to grasp pleadings/claims/etc. Furthermore, the questions she asks in class to the student on call help to make sure that I fully understood the aspects of the decision and the policy reasonings behind them. Lastly, she always left us with questions to consider for next class/reading, which helped to focus my reading notes. I learned everything about Civil Procedure from the Teaching Assistant. Nathan is a great teacher and I am so grateful to have had him during this course. The textbook was well written and useful! Professor Burnstein had a wonderful T.A. Many of the concepts addressed in the classroom lectures and discussions were clear. Going to the T.A. ' s review sessions was the only way that I was able to completely understand the material. He made amazing comprehensive PowerPoints that explained the material in a much easier way to grasp. When he saw most of the class struggling he made himself available almost anytime during the week. In class exercises to understand the material When Professor Burstein brought in actual claims and went over them I found that more helpful than a long discussion with the class Prof. Burstein chose an excellent textbook for the course. The TA was very helpful and available to help the class my TA this semester was amazing and his name was Nathan Andrews. I would not have survived civil
