OLDFall 2022 Law School Course Evaluations
What aspect(s) of the course or instruction could be improved? There was an enormous amount of reading assigned considering this is a 2 credit course. Way too much reading for a 2 credit class. Nobody does the reading because it is boring and too much. The class feels uncomfortable raising their hand because he shuts down the people that do raise their hand. It is difficult to pay attention in class because he does not make the material interesting and seemingly does not try to make the class even remotely engaging. There is far, far, far, far, far too much worked assigned for this class. The amount of reading VASTLY outpaced my four and three credit classes, and I lot of it I firmly believe was not necessary. nearly everything. The way he talks about the material, their is no passion. Professor Newhouse has to be one of the most boring, albeit educated, professors I have ever had in my 15+ years in education. Prof. Newhouse addressed issues out of order and didn ' t engage the class regularly in class discussion despite a piece of our grade being based on participation. He was behind schedule the whole time but never updated what we should read/prepare. i feel like the information couldve been presented in a more interesting / exciting way none The readings were too much. The material is dense and it takes a long time to go over everything. I think it would ' ve been beneficial to cut the readings shorter. Sometimes when moving on from practice problem discussions it felt like there was no good answer, or if there was one I ' d have to think of it myself. I think exploring the moral and ethical ambiguity is a good exercise, but it should be clear what the ethical decisions are before moving on to the next topic. Stop using the Gillers textbook. Sure, the hypos are interesting, but the book adds no value to our actual understanding of the rules. There was way too much reading assigned, especially for a 2 credit class that only meets once a week. The whole class could not balance it on top of all of their other studies, since this class gave us more homework per week (consistently throughout the semester) than my 4-credit class. The Gillers textbook is an interesting read if you have time and are reading it for leisure, but as law students who have to delegate time (in addition to reading an entire second book to prepare for the final exam), we do not have enough time at all to actively engage with the material. This class should focus more on just teaching from the rule book because that is what we are being tested on. It also doesn ' t make sense for us to pay over $300 for a book (with a connected quizzing code) when other professors have more effectively taught this course with entirely free resources. Most of the class seems lost the whole time because we do not have a working knowledge of the rules. I think that there was a lot of reading, which I can understand as ethics is a huge part of lawyering, but I do think that a smaller amount of reading may be more manageable especially
