OLDFall 2022 Law School Course Evaluations
What aspect(s) of the course or instruction could be improved? I would like to have more input and time to work on cover letters and resumes.
I am disappointed that this course does not count for the 84 credit hours. This was not conveyed to us prior to signing up for the course. Also, considering everything we have to do for other classes, this course assigns way too much work and expects too much on the whole. The name of this course is very misleading. I feel like this is more of a course of helping us grow and survive law school rather than preparing for professional success. Maybe having more guest speakers in the legal field speak about their careers and helping with network strategies. I think that when signing up for the class I thought it would be more pratical advice like how to apply for jobs, interviews, etc. but instead it is more like personal growth so I feel like maybe updating the syllabus/course description to reflect that would be beneficial I do not think this class should be offered. I believe it does not improve the experience of a first semester law student at all and the professor and TA are very condescending and they lack understanding. The pressure they place on students to treat their class as if it is just as important as our other courses is ridiculous. Really determine what the purpose of the course is, sell it to incoming students as exactly that, and then do those things. This course was sold as a class for incoming, diverse, non traditional students to learn pertinent skills relevant to being successful as an attorney. This course ended up being two hours of lecture from someone that doesn ' t understand the world around them has modernized in the last forty years. Prof. Baker is completely out of touch with his students. That ' old-school ' mentality of what constitutes professionalism is not effective. I want to visit and speak with attorneys that are practicing now. How has the profession changed, where is it going, how do we get there? I don ' t need to be told how to sleep, exercise, or that spending time with friends is beneficial. I want skills I can use to prepare me to be an attorney. This class is not meeting the basic title of the course. This class was a frustrating blemish on an excellent Suffolk experience. It could have been really rewarding had it been run in an organized and productive manner. The major work product of this class is the reflection papers, yet their required format was not accurately reflected in the syllabus or clearly communicated to us in class. The most frequent reflection question dealt with REVAMP, a philosophy adjacent but not parallel to the structure of our textbook authored by a professor teaching a different section of the course. Yet this philosophy was given to us once in full, on 10/18. The readings for this class were similarly disjointed. While they were topical to professional success, they were often unreviewed in class. We were assigned to bring a poem to class but never used it. Nor were there quizzes or other methods to assess whether we understood the assigned material, which could have functioned as opportunities for us to correct misunderstandings. Time was spent watching videos and talking politics rather than in discussion about skills. Professor Baker also twice offered (recommended?
