Spring 2022 Course Evaluations

Additional comments

Judge Giles had clear class favorites. Judge Giles would compliment specific students more than others and not interrupt her favorite performances. During two classes, Judge Giles commented on a student’s voice. This comment was not about being louder or softer, but specifically the character of the student’s voice. This comment was highly inappropriate and unprofessional. If Judge Giles wanted to comment on a student’s voice, she should have done so privately. Judge Giles did not make sure that students complied with the masks policy. She allowed certain students not to wear masks when the policy was still in place. Judge Giles also continually complained about COVID and the mask policy despite the school mandate. Her comments became redundant and unnecessary. Judge Giles would ignore where students were in their performances and then become confused. I suspect she was on her phone. Often, Judge Giles would have to ask the student to repeat their last question or go back to where they were. Judge Giles went on monotonous tangents that wasted class time. In some classes, she would tell us stories. In some classes, she would give us an English lesson. Judge Gile’s most used phrase was, "I digress." Of course, Judge Giles’ experience is unmatched, but her stories should be limited. She wasted class time with her repetitive antics. In summary, as I had high hopes for this class, I am highly disappointed with how it went, the lack of instruction and feedback, and Judge Giles’s mannerisms and demeanor. I will not be recommending this class to any students. Judge Giles is great but if she would allow the students to finish and then give instruction, the course would be better, she would teach more, and students would learn more. Professor Giles is a fantastic professor and really has helped my anxiety with public speaking. She is a very responsive and approachable teacher unlike others in the school and she really does care about us students. Lastly, she teaches us very important practical skills that will be helpful in the near future and being a judge for over 30 years, her tips and advice will serve useful to me. I really enjoyed the course and I got a lot out of it, but I wish we had been pushed harder.
