This examination is a limited open book examination which means that each student will be permitted to bring the required texts for the course and any notes the student has prepared. No treatises, commercial study aids or outlines, or other such materials are permitted. For a full explanation of the exam rules, please see description on prior years’ examinations. There will be a midterm paper as well as a final exam. Professor Rodwin. This course introduces students to the law, organization and finance of our health care system. We will examine private health insurance, and the Medicare and Medicaid programs as well as health care institutions, mainly, hospitals, and managed care organizations. We will also examine how hospitals and physicians are compensated, the regulation of health care facilities, the tax status of health care institutions, issues of access to health care services and quality of care. Other issues examined include how medical personnel and insurers make decisions of medical necessity, the role of grievance and appeals when services are denied, and the role of liability. Readings include articles, cases and legal materials (e.g., pleadings, regulations, contracts) as well as news and policy and Internet-based sources. There will be a

midterm assignment as well as a final exam. Grading based on mid-term and final exam.
