Patent Law Patent law is a specialized area of law which is a subset of intellectual property law. An attorney must have a science background such as a degree in engineering, biology, chemistry or physics to become a registered patent attorney. Only registered patent attorneys can represent inventors seeking patents. Registration requires passing a special exam commonly called the Patent Bar Exam. Any attorney, however, can engage in other aspects of patent work such as patent litigation.
